Mama's Llamas

Description
Mama’s Llamas is a 2D up-scroller in which you play as “Guava", whose mission is to transport tourists in Machu Pichu to the top of the mountain. Player’s will need to avoid obstacles, fly ingeniously using their tongue, spit against any enemies and successfully bring the tourists to the highest point of the mountain so they can observe the beauty of Machu Pichu.
My Role
After learning the ropes of UI programming in Bard is Broke, I took this oportunity to transfer my skills over to this game jam I did with friends. In this project, I again was the UI/UX Artist, Designer and Programmer, and used Figma, Pixlr, and a little bit of Medibang-- a bunch of free software as I had no access to more professional means.
Even as our team was pitching the idea, the first thing that came to mind was a Disney movie called The Emperor's New Groove. I wanted to create a theme with the UI that represents the culture in Machu Pichu, and to do that I thought about the clothing. With the bright colours of the clothing, I had a great design idea to use that scheme to show how silly our game is.

While thinking of the tutorial, HUD, and in-game user experience, I talked about a lot of ideas with the team. Using tutorials to teach the user felt like the most optimal way in a short game like ours. We also wanted the user to enjoy playing our game, whether they were interested in our story or not. I tried to let pop-ups show up, and used as many symbols as I could to ensure the instructions were straightforward.
Our team consisted of two people who are not in the game industry, and so I learned a lot about talking and communicating about the project without using too many technical words. It was a lot of fun implementing some ideas from both our narrative designer and our main artist. Some of the fun and user-friendly ideas I came up with were after they both playtested our game and explained their thoughts.
