Mama's Llamas

Description

Mama’s Llamas is a 2D up-scroller in which you play as “Guava", whose mission is to transport tourists in Machu Pichu to the top of the mountain. Player’s will need to avoid obstacles, fly ingeniously using their tongue, spit against any enemies and successfully bring the tourists to the highest point of the mountain so they can observe the beauty of Machu Pichu.

My Role

After learning the ropes of UI programming in Bard is Broke, I took this oportunity to transfer my skills over to this game jam I did with friends. In this project, I again was the UI/UX Artist, Designer and Programmer, and used Figma, Pixlr, and a little bit of Medibang-- a bunch of free software as I had no access to more professional means.

Our team had 3 different programmers: A gameplay programmer, a sfx programmer, and a UI programmer (me). Although we were used to working in a team, we still sat together and came up with a plan for how scripts should be writted and what data needs to connect. We also added a discord channel where we would mention what script we're working on, and when we're off of the script. Because we were able to communicate all of this, implementation and the overall pipeline went really smooth with minimal merge conflicts.

With only one week to both design, create art assets, and program, I used a lot of features using Unity's toolkit and uGUI. I ensured the layout scaled well in canvas, and programmed needed features such as the score board loading. During this, I ensured that the computer can enter the basic math and properly align everything to fit the aesthetic and functionality our team was looking for. This was more tedious than hard, yet I had a lot of fun creating functions that allow these features to work.

A lot of my work and design is integrated into the gameplay programming itself, especially because some of the triggers are when buttons are pressed. Because of this, I ensured to create functions that can easily be edited without breaking the rest of the code. I had to think a lot about what backend information the UI would need, and how to integrate this with the UI I created. It was a lot of fun figuring out these problems, and I believe that with more time, everything would be more refined than it currently is.
